In recent years, the water market has been considered as an efficient mechanism for optimal allocating of water resources and overcoming some challenge in the water sector. However, there are many questions about the water market such as its economic consequences. This study investigated the economic consequences of local water markets in Ardabil county, Iran. For this purpose, after estimating the production function, the value of marginal product of water was calculated and compared with water price in the market. Results show that farmers have been relied heavily on the local water market so that they bought 23% of their required water from local water markets during the farming year of 2009-2010. Water was traded at 841 Rials/m3 that is closed to the economic value of water (930 Rials/m3). Therefore, it can be said that the water trades in local markets based on its economic value. Results also show that after participating in the water market, farmers' income was increased up to 1.8% - 23.9%. According to the results, the water markets can be considered as a useful mechanism to alleviate excessive demand for irrigation water, optimal water allocation, increasing efficiency of water use and decreasing the government expenditures.
