Groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid areas are the most critical resources for sustainable development and hence, protecting of these resources is essential. The yearly average decline of 0.44 meters in the groundwater level of the Broujen- Faradonbeh aquifer reflects the excessive abstraction of the plain aquifer. In this study, long term (1992-2011) piezometric data and water budget results were taken into account in evaluating groundwater resources using the WEAP model and then management actions were applied to protect the aquifer. Each of management actions was evaluated as a scenario in the WEAP model. All of seven considered management scenarios, including changes in cropping pattern, increase in efficiency of irrigation, and water withdrawal restriction with combining to each other were carried out in the WEAP model. The results showed that increasing in efficiency of irrigation by using modern irrigation systems, replacement of 25 to 50 percent of alfalfa and potato area with wheat cultivation would be useful adjacent to make restriction in groundwater withdrawal. The results also showed that the WEAP model has high capability in scenario development and assessmentGroundwater resources in arid and semi-arid areas are the most critical resources for sustainable development and hence, protecting of these resources is essential.
