Seepage is one of the important problems in design, construction and operation of earth dams, for its influence on stability of dams and water losses from the dam reservoir. Nowadays, many softwares have been provided for solving the seepage equation using numerical methods. In this study, we tried to evaluate and compare the ability of two finite element based softwares, MSEEP and PLAXIS, for solving seepage equations in earth dams. For this purpose, the Karkheh earth dam was selected as a case study. The results confirmed the high ability of these software for simulating and estimating the seepage through homogeneous dams bodies, but the error of the results for the inhomogeneous section of the Karkheh earth dam was very high for MSEEP (50 percent), while the error of PLAXIS model was very small (3 percent). This showed the higher ability of PLAXIS model in solving complex problems of seepage.
