One of the most simple and effective flood control solution is detention rock fill dam. Considerably less construction equipments, technology and cost requirement are the advantage at distension rook fill dams. To find the optimum thickness of such dams, series of experiments were carried out in the field Laboratory Shiraz University (Faculty of Water Engineering), using cobbles with average diameters of D50 = 5 cm, D50 = 7.5 cm and D50 = 10 cm. A relationship between rock fill dam thickness, outflow discharge and average diameter of the cobbles were developed.
